Sam Chase

We still have so much to do.

It was with deep sadness last week that I read that new census numbers show Oregon is among the highest rates of poverty for African Americans and our overall rates of children in poverty have skyrocketed.

While I have spent most of my adult life focused on addressing poverty and improving the lives of children, it is clear we have so much more to do.

Here's how I'll address poverty at Metro:

  • I'll work for high paying, poverty alleviating job creation.  That means protecting our region's quality of life to attract and retain a high quality workforce, enhancing our globally competitive advantage in the traded sector by promoting industrial sites and active freight and transportation movement.
  • Every child deserves a stable safe place to call home.  Research studies are clear—when children have a stable home, they perform a full grade point better in school.  I co-founded Affordable Housing Now! and we passed the 30% set aside—generating $150 million for affordable housing, low-income people, and communities of color.  It is critical that we protect and leverage this and other policies that will generate as much more affordable housing funding over the next 5 years.   I will bring affordable housing strategies to Metro that will expand Oregonian's opportunities throughout the region.
  • I co-led a grassroots effort to pass $197 million in school bonds for Portland.  Now, through Metro, I'll strengthen the programs that teach children about the value of our environment and stewardship.  I'll fight for active transportation zones around our schools—so that biking, walking, and the environment around our schools are safe and enjoyable for children and their families.

I have a vision for our region AND I have a record of accomplishment that shows I'll get the job done.

Please contribute to my campaign so we can make a difference. I also need volunteers! If you or someone you know is available to volunteer 6-8 hours per week, please call me! 503-810-4504.

Sincerely,
Sam Chase

Meet Sam Chase

Photo of SamShortly after college, I accepted a job as a substitute teacher. I was assigned to a school in the Cabrini Green projects of Chicago - known for their extreme poverty, violence and crime. There I met and worked with kindergarten children who were already left behind. That experience helped shape my values today—that every child deserves an opportunity to succeed in life.

I've worked to create jobs, protect our environment, strengthen public schools, build affordable housing for our lowest-income residents and communities of color, help the uninsured access healthcare and create an economy that provides opportunity for all.

These are the values I'll fight for as your next Metro Councilor.
